Enhanced Biocarbon

We are actively working towards restoring degraded lands and habitats worldwide by identifying and targeting nutritional deficiencies in soil and treating them with our unique biochar hybrids that are infused with bio-stimulants and other media.

Targeting deficiencies in soil

While biochar has been proven to improve soil conditions in most all conditions, our interest in further refinement came from researching the benefits of biochar that had been post-treated to specifically target key soil nutrient deficiencies in plot trials. Karmanterra is working with leading experts and universities across the world to develop unique enhanced biocarbons that will revolutionize agriculture and soil science.

Utilizing Nanotech

Much promise lies within the power of nanotechnology. By utilizing this unique and novel technology, we are able to amplify the highly porous surface area of refined carbons and increase the surface area of these structures dramatically. This enables us to incorporate specific post-treatment molecules that bind to the carbon structure, converting the carbon from alkaline to acidic, an adaptation with specific affinity to saline/desert soil types.

Facilitating afforestation

Our proprietary carbons improve plant health and survivability outcomes when used on agricultural, restoration, and afforestation projects worldwide. This allows for significant cost savings when compared to non-treatment, making the biochar a tool to scale climate related offset projects.

Indigenous Species

The planting of native trees and shrubs are essential to restoration efforts. Native tree species are non-invasive and are linked to healthier outcomes of insects and birds supporting local biodiversity, while typically requiring less water and fertilizer inputs. In many instances native tree populations have been suppressed through continued desertification, human intervention, and the introduction of invasive, non-native plant species which has had a causal effect on the nutrient density and organic matter found in the soil. Often, specialized nutrient introduction, such as biostimulant enhanced nanocarbon is required to ensure ideal conditions during reforestation, ensuring maximum survivability. Trees such as the Ghaf are perfect examples of native trees that should be proliferated in desert conditions.

Mangrove

Mangroves

Mangroves are an essential tool in the fight against climate change. Not only do their deep root structures capture and store large amounts of carbon, but they also help build and restore vital coastlines, improving ecological diversity and protecting against sea level rise. Their ability to thrive in saline environments makes them a perfect tool for aforestation approaches in areas with low access to freshwater resources such as the Arabian peninsula. Thriving in tropical and subtropical environments it is estimated that over 25% of the world's mangrove resources have been lost over the past 20 years. Karmanterra is committed to helping with mangrove restoration efforts around the globe by developing structural soils for mangrove propagule transplantation to increase productivity and lessen reliance on traditional peat moss.

Bamboo

Bamboo is an incredible plant with a multitude of uses from paper to construction material. It has one of the most productive growth rates of any plant species and with that comes the ability to capture a significant amount of carbon in a short time period compared to pine, eucalyptus, and other tree varieties. Bamboo is also critical to reforestation and restoration efforts because of its ability to provide windbreaks, raise the water table, and increase organic matter in the surrounding soil. As part of our ongoing restoration efforts, Karmanterra is researching bamboo as a “pioneer” species, as it creates the conditions for other plants to thrive in areas where the soil has been degraded and would otherwise not support reforestation efforts.
